Just over five years ago, I was between jobs and found myself in an interview for a position working in a warehouse. Admittedly, I knew nothing about the company and had an interview lined up for the police force the following week. After a short discussion with then Operations Manager, and now Operations & Learning and Development Manager, Lee Duffy, I had a really good feeling that Aico was the opportunity I had been looking for. I accepted Lee’s job offer and cancelled the interview the following week, and I’m so glad I did.
It was clear from the start that there was a strong values-based culture at Aico. Working in the fast-paced warehouse kept me on my toes and gave me a great introduction to the company. It was here I got my first taste of Aico team building, a positive theme throughout my career. Lee had highlighted that progression opportunities at Aico were common, and after nine months, I applied for a position with the Marketing team, where I would spend the next three and a half years.
My time in Marketing saw my self-confidence flourish and my development accelerate. During the COVID years, the company adapted to the need for online content by developing a film studio, which I was given the trust and freedom to oversee daily. Not only did I start to develop film and editing skills I’d never experienced before, but I also got to spend more time with my external colleagues and clients to film and produce content. The Marketing role presented a wide range of opportunities and skills, from creative writing to graphic design.
Following my time with the Marketing team, I was offered the chance to look after Aico’s Customer Relationship Management System. Having spent the best part of a year learning the basics of coding and development, I felt trusted to take on the role, make it my own, and develop my own solutions to aid all Aico teams with their data.
This year, I was offered my current role of Relationship Manager. I now travel North Wales and West England daily, offering a wealth of support to Social Landlords, Electrical Contractors, and Electrical Wholesalers. The Aico RM touches base with all points of our supply chain, delivering bespoke FIA-accredited CPD training, offering specification advice, advising on best practice, and much more.
There have been many common themes throughout my time at Aico. A strong emphasis on culture and values, an adaptive and ever-present opportunity for team building, but most importantly for my confidence and development, was the constant sense of trust from Aico to take on a role, make it my own, and receive the support to thrive.
