Over 85 Gasway Service engineers attended Aico’s FIA CPD accredited Expert Installer Training over a two-day training event. The training was implemented to give the engineers the support they required to install Aico’s products confidently and save unnecessary revisits. They were also provided guidance on the recent amendments to The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Regulations in England and Wales. Gasway Services Ltd, established in 1982 is the largest heating company in the East of England. They have worked with local Housing Providers for the last 20 years, ensuring the best possible service for customers and their communities.
The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 came into effect in October 2022 and require all private and social landlords to install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm in any room of a property that contains a fuel-burning appliance, such as gas boilers, fuel-burning stoves, oil burners, biofuels, coal boilers/stoves, wood pellets, etc. Gasway installs a range of Aico products including Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, fire alarms, environmental sensors, and the Ei1000G Gateway to ensure that they and their customers are compliant with the updates.
To improve their knowledge and guarantee they could provide the best service to their customers when installing Aico products they contacted Aico for support. Aico’s Regional Specification Manager for East Anglia (West) Rob Avery conducted a two-day training event at The Nest Community Centre, Norwich delivering their free FIA CPD accredited Expert Installer Training to all the engineers employed by Gasway.
Liam Winter, Electrical Operations Manager at Gasway, was delighted with the training and commented “The training was greatly received and equipped our staff with the knowledge, confidence, and ability to ensure that we are correctly installing Aico’s great products. It also gave them the tools to educate our customers on the importance of fire and CO safety and what to do in the event of an alarm sounding.
Not only was the training informative from the regulatory/legislative aspect but the interactive, hands-on training delivered by Robert Avery engaged our staff and gave them a better understanding of how to install and set up the devices correctly.
Due to the nature of the industry, we work in, fire and CO safety is at the forefront of what we do, and to be able to keep our customers and their properties safe with the knowledge that the Aico products won’t let us down is of great reassurance.
We also have a large portfolio of social housing landlords we work with and continuing to invest in this type of training, not only gives them the confidence and belief in us as a contractor but also ensures that they remain compliant as a landlord”
By providing Expert Installer training, Gasway highlighted the importance of house coding to their Engineers. When installing interconnected alarms, the engineers will need to set up the alarms in a system to recognise each other and then ensure that system is closed off to avoid the alarms being triggered by neighbouring systems.
David Frosdick, Electrical Contracts Manager at Gasway recognised this, stating “The training was very useful and brought to my attention and that of our staff, the importance of house coding. This will only benefit our installers and us as an organisation.”
The training also ensured Gasway’s installers are equipped with the knowledge they need to be confident in installing Aico products in the future. Investing time into training can have additional benefits which include:
Gasway’s employees will also be able to join Aico’s Installer Community, which includes the opportunity to enrol on Aico’s City & Guilds Assured Domestic Fire & CO Alarm Systems course. The Community also provides access to training videos, community challenges, and discussions.
Rob Avery, Regional Specification Manager for East Anglia (West) at Aico commented on the benefits of Aico’s training:
‘One of our foundations is Education, coming from the same background as the people I now have the pleasure to train, allows me to tailor my training methods to keep people engaged.
I aim to make sure that everyone walks out of the training course with the knowledge and peace of mind that they are using our equipment in the way it has been designed to work, and that it has also been installed correctly according to the guidance, this, in turn, allows the client peace of mind that it’s done right. This saves the installer any unnecessary call-backs because they know it’s done right the first time and they can move on to the next job.’
Going forward Gasway has committed to ensuring that every new employee, from apprentice to manager, goes through Expert Installer Training. They are confident in installing Aico products and are implementing what they have learned throughout the business, ensuring home life safety devices are installed correctly every time.
