We strive to reduce our impact on the environment, locally, nationally and globally, developing products, services and implementing green practices to become more sustainable. We are aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

We have recently been selected as a Net Zero Carbon Business Champion by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC). As one of the first 14 companies across the UK’s construction supply chain to join the initiative, Aico has committed to supporting the sector’s industry change programme, CO2nstruct Zero to address the climate emergency and demonstrate their commitment to reducing carbon emissions throughout their business operations.
We have signed the Zero Carbon Shropshire pledge to support other local businesses on the journey to net zero and show our commitment to addressing the Shropshire-wide climate and ecological crisis. The initiative is supported by the Shropshire Climate Action Partnership, who created and oversee the Zero Carbon Shropshire Plan that provides an adequate response to the climate emergency. We will share our learnings from our own journey to net zero with other members and raise awareness of the importance of becoming a sustainable business to the Shropshire community.
In 2019 we moved into our new headquarters on a greenfield site in Oswestry. During the planning stages, every effort was made to reduce the project’s environmental impact, including elements that will benefit both wildlife and residents. Four acres of our seven-acre site is dedicated to open space. We undertook a planting scheme consisting of over 300 trees, 4,000 shrubs and a 2,500 square meter wildflower meadow. We also have an attenuation pond, which means that the site’s rainwater is not discharged into the sewage system. This large outdoor area not only provides a habitat for local wildlife but is an area to be enjoyed by our team and the local community.
We continue to review our primary packaging, working through every range, while migrating to environmentally friendly printing processes, materials and construction. In 2020 we digitised our product instructions in relation to the 3000 Series of alarms. This was achieved by significantly reducing the size of the instruction leaflets to the absolute minimum and providing a QR code to access a full set of PDF instructions. This has resulted in a 38-tonne reduction in the paper.
Waste elimination is an ongoing project; our packaging is fully recyclable and constructed from recycled materials. In 2019, we eliminated the use of plastic in our dispatch operation, instead utilising a recycled-paper-based alternative. To further this we have launched the eco-fit range (exclusive to Aico’s 3000 series) to reduce waste packaging and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
As education is part of our ethos it is a key area in which we provide support through Corporate Social Responsibility. We support many schools and students, and we incorporate sustainability and environmental preservation into the advice we give. Through projects such as the Enterprise Challenge, we encourage students to consider the environment and sustainability from a business perspective; considering materials, resources, transportation, the life of the product, disposal and impact on the environment.
